Youth baseball and softball run nearly all year in the Sacramento valley, and backstops take a beating for it. We build and repair chain link backstops for schools, park districts, leagues and private fields across the region. A backstop is a tall, heavy structure, so the design starts with the level of play, the distance from home plate and what sits behind it: bleachers, a parking lot or a street.
The usual build is galvanized pipe posts in deep concrete footings with heavy chain link fabric, angled wings on each side and often an overhang at the top to stop foul balls. Flat valley fields make layout simple. The digging is another matter, since hardpan can lie under the infield and has to be broken through so the footings reach full depth. Irrigation lines run under almost every field, and we ask for the irrigation plan before digging.
Repairs are common. Fabric behind the plate stretches and curls from thousands of pitches, bottom rails bend, and ties snap. We can re-stretch or replace the fabric, add a bottom rail or a wood kick board, and straighten or replace bent posts. We also build dugout fencing, baseline fence and outfield fence, and can add padding or top cap along the rails. Work on public fields is scheduled around the season and the district's rules.
Backstops in Sacramento: common questions
Can you repair a backstop without replacing it?
Usually. If the posts and frame are straight and solid, we replace the worn fabric, rails and ties. If the posts are bent or loose in their footings, a rebuild is safer.
Do you build backstops for home practice areas?
Yes, on lots with room for one. A backstop is far taller than a normal residential fence, so the planning office for your address and any association need to approve it first.
When is the best time to schedule field work?
Between seasons, and in dry weather when equipment will not rut the field. Sacramento's dry months make that easier to plan than in wetter places. Call early, because every league wants the same weeks.
